Explora II

Fincantieri | Work continues in Genoa on EXPLORA II

Work continues in Genoa‘s Sestri Ponente neighborhood on Explora II, the luxury cruise ship commissioned by the MSC Group and built by Fincantieri. TimelapseLab devices were chosen to monitor the work.

Explora II, is part of the six ships Explora Journeys, the MSC Group’s new luxury brand. A first section of the ship, built in Castellammare di Stabia, recently arrived at the Genoa shipyard. Work will continue for another 16 months, with an expected delivery date of August 2024.

The Explora Journeys ships will represent the high quality of Italian engineering, innovation and design around the world, a concentrate of high technology ever closer to the ships of the future. In fact, all ships will be equipped with the latest environmental and marine technologies, including: selective catalytic reduction technology, plug-in connectivity for shore power, underwater noise management systems to help protect marine life, and a full range of energy-efficient on-board equipment to optimize engine use to further reduce emissions.

The Explora II Coin Ceremony was held on Feb. 8, 2023, an ancient and symbolic tradition involving the placement and subsequent sealing of one or more coins in a section of the keel, one of the earliest “birth” ceremonies for a ship.

Present at the ceremony were Liguria Region President Giovanni Toti, Genoa City Mayor Marco Bucci, MSC Group Cruise Division Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago, and Explora Jouneys CEO Michael Ungerer. On the Fincantieri side, on the other hand, the company’s CEO Pierroberto Folgiero and General Manager Merchant Ship Division Luigi Matarazzo were present. The ceremony reiterated the importance of the ‘investment not only for the companies involved but also for the economic and social fabric of the city; in fact, the shipyard will provide jobs for 2,500 people for more than two years.

TimelapseLab continues its collaboration with Fincantieri and MSC by providing the devices and platform for monitoring the shipyards and improving communication with the many stakeholders involved.
