Large urban regeneration projects require digital tools capable of documenting every phase continuously. TimelapseLab is supporting CG Edilcoop in monitoring the MIND construction site in Milan, during the second phase of a project spanning eighteen months.
The Milano Innovation District has been undergoing transformation for years, with several construction sites running in parallel and the boundaries of each changing as the works progress. In a setting like this, having a continuous sequence of date-stamped images means being able to distinguish precisely between the progress of one’s own contract and that of the wider development.
The installed device is connected to the TimelapseLab cloud platform and captures images at regular intervals. The archive accompanies the project’s site monitoring for its entire duration and feeds the production of time-lapse content, which, on such a high-profile area, becomes communication material as well as a control tool.
A second phase has a feature that the first does not: it starts from existing built conditions. Documenting the works from the outset preserves a record of the starting situation, which proves useful in inspections and in dealings with the other operators active in the area, where establishing who did what and when is not always straightforward.
Over an eighteen-month project, the people involved also change. Project managers, site supervisors and client representatives come and go, and every handover carries the risk that part of the site’s history is lost. A continuous visual archive acts as a shared memory: whoever takes over starts from a documented basis rather than from their predecessor’s account, with all the gaps and interpretations that such an account entails.
Monitoring of the MIND construction site in Milan documents the building process through periodic images, as distinct from continuous video surveillance, with automatic blurring of faces and number plates in line with a GDPR by design approach.
